Introduction
Mortality from stroke in the Philippines remains high with 67,475 deaths in 2022. We aimed to prospectively collect uniform data for TIA and stroke.
Methodology
The PNA1DB-Stroke (Clinicaltrials.gov NCT04972058) is an ongoing multi-center observational study and standing database of patients diagnosed with first or recurrent TIA, ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke or cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), ≥18 years old, and admitted in any of the country’s 11 accredited adult neurology residency training institutions.
Results
There was a total of 6,479 stroke patients from 2021-2023, with mean age of 58. Of these, 56% were males and 44% were females. Ischemic stroke account for 56% and hemorrhagic stroke was 33%. Only 12.5% of stroke patients arrived at the ER within 3 hours post stroke. Hypertension is the most common risk factor in 67% followed by smoking (24%), diabetes (20% and dyslipidemia (12%). There were 4.1% patients with Atrial fibrillation. Thrombolysis rate was 6.2% and EVT rate was 0.4%. Mortality from Ischemic stroke is 10.4% while mortality from ICH is high at 25%.
Conclusion
Stroke occurs at a younger age with a mean of 58 years old. Uncontrolled hypertension, smoking and diabetes are the most common risk factors. There is high pevalence and mortality rate of ICH. IV thrombolysis rate is improving but there are inadequate resources for EVT in most Philippine hospitals.
